The importance of convergence to the film industry:
converngence is two media industries working together to promote a film or another media product. for example, a film industry converging with a game industry to produce a game which is similar to the film or connects with it. convergence is important to the film industry in many different ways, one way could be to promote the film. the more ways in which the film or images of the film are seen the more chance there is that people will go to the cinema to watch it or buy the film whilst they are out shopping. the more industries that the film organisation converge with the better as people will be seeing the films merchandise more.
financially converging with another industry is important to the film industry as it is a financial income for them on top of the money they recieve from people viewing the film. the more money they recieve the more money they can put into a second film or a sequel, this will hopefully mean that the second film will be better than the first.
How might convergence affect the production, distribution, marketing and exhibition.
How might convergence affect the way audiences ‘consume’ films?
convergence might affect the ways in which the audience "consume" a film.
one way in which convergence affects this is the use of online streaming sites, which some allow you to download dvds from or some allows you to watch them on a particular site. this means less people are going to the cinema and paying to watch the film, or going to buy thr dvd from a shop. however, these films are added on in parts and you will notice on youtube, these films are never online fro a long period of time as of violation and copyright rights.
there are hundreds of websites that will allow you to do this ilegally but for free. this means that the film industry and the dvd industry are loosing out on money because people realise they can get the film for free and in the comfort of their own home, so why go out to buy the film or sit in a cinema with 30-40 other people and pay for it. Also, you have got online players such as BBC iPlayer and Channel 4oD that you can watch TV programs on, but as well as them you can also watch a films on there if the film have been played on those TV channels with in a certain amount of days. You have not realy got the classic VHS videos around any more or are not that common anymore but are still used by some people. VHS got over taken by the release of the DVD which aloud the view/consumer to be able to do things that you couldn’t do with a video tape. For example you can now have the choice of a language sometimes from about 20 or weather you want the sub-titles to come up. There is also the added feature of the special features; that will have things like deleted scenes, gag reel, behind the scene, interviews and much more. With DVDs there is no more fast forwarding or rewinding the as now you can choose what scene you want to watch or you can skip chapters to find the right place, but saying this you can rewind to see a shot or scene again.
Now there is the Blue-ray DVD which is the same as a original DVD but has a much better picture, where the colours pop out and the image is alot clearer. Blue-ray DVDs are more money then normal DVDs but I think that if you want that quality that you can get from them then it is worth it. you can still pick up original DVDs at the same prices as before blue-ray came out in places like HMV or supermarkets like ASDA. You can also purchase them online on websites such as Amazon or Play where you can often get a discount on shipping fees or the DVD its self.
